It's not so much that it was unimportant to me, just not lanrey as important in the larger scheme of things. With each season, the series kind of took a step back and revealed a larger picture meaning that what seemed monumentally important when looking at a small picture wasn't as important to the larger whole. In the end Walt *was* special. The Others wanted him for that reason (and that they couldn't reproduce) and, in the Lost: Missing Pieces episode "Room 23", it is implied that the others are experimenting on Walt and what he is capable of freaks them out. While they don't show this - one can assume that the next step is that they then decided they would let Michael take him off the island because they were afraid of him. To me that satisfactorily explained Walt's story arc. But that is just one blogger's opinion!
