Just something I waentd to add: I wonder whether fan edits can be considered constructive criticism or not. It probably also depends on the idea the cutter had in mind, i.e. whether it is intended as as fun ( Let's do our personal cut ), a suggestion ( George, it would have been better if Here, see what I mean? ) or as bashing ( George, you're an idiot, and I'll show you how to fix your stupid films within 2 minutes. ) On the other hand, even cutting the movies for constructive criticism could be considered as changing the vision of the director and is different to just writing a balanced review. Hard to tell By the way, there is a German fan edit (not available to the public for copyright reasons) where the cutter explicitly states that his cuts are what they are his personal take on the movies. For instance, his first contact with ANH was the radio drama that's why he adds some deleted scenes of ANH to his cut to make it closer to the radio drama. The cutter even apologizes in advance if someone feels offended by the changes he makes to the movies (not only George, but all Star Wars fans) and clearly emphasizes that the cuts are his own personal vision. (Yes, he cuts many scenes out of TPM so that he likes the movie better but again, it's his personal take.)
