What you're calling a spynosis, I usually hear called a blurb or an elevator pitch. A spynosis is usually anywhere from three, to five, to ten pages long and is a complete summary of the story. Also, I just had an agent tell me that she usually doesn't read it until she's read the sample pages. If the author can't write, she doesn't bother reading the spynosis. It certainly helps to have a good blurb in your cover letter. If you can distill the essence of your book down to a snappy description the marketing department will love you, and that's no small thing. But based on what I've heard at conferences, your sample pages, and later the full manuscript, are what make the sale with the editor.
