Alas, we'll probably never know extcaly why. But the official reason is that Massa caused an avoidable accident. Presumably the stewards felt that Massa should have seen that Hamilton had the inside line and given him room.This type of incident is a judgment call and in the judgement of the stewards, Massa was at fault.
