For about 3 years now, I've had my system cofignured so that the background is only displayed when there are no windows open. I have all windows maximised, and I see my background less than once a month, and only briefly. What is my background? Well, I had to check. It's the default X windows gray that looks like it was originally intended to detect monitor problems.
