no. Surprisingly he allowed me to drag him onto the dance floor. It was dark and I pereed up at him. The first coherent words I said to him were Your eyes aren't blue. He looked at me like I had lost my mind and agreed with me. My sister had gone on and on about the cute neighbor guy with the black hair and the blue eyes. Nope, his eyes are brown. We spent the rest of the night dancing and being harassed by the DJ, who happened to be the guy's dad. Time came to through the bouquet and yup, I caught the sucker. Me, who was never getting married, like ever. So, cute guy, whose name was Doug, offered to drive me home at the end of the night. I escaped the clutches of my parents and my very drunk sister and scurried out into the snowstorm. He drove me home and we sat in the driveway and talked until four in the morning. We laughed uproariously about him being an usher and me catching the flowers since neither one of us ever planned on getting married. I worked on a horse farm north of Toronto and Doug came up and spent Christmas Day with me, we drove all over Brampton looking for anyplace that was open because, hey, I hadn't planned on company for Christmas dinner and all I had was minute rice and mac and cheese. Which is what we ate eventually since there was no place open, not even the convenience store. Long story short, we moved in together in May of 1976, Doug proposed to me on December 20, 1976 and we were married May 7, 1977. That's Kentucky Derby Day, by the way, Seattle Slew won that year and most of our guests went to watch the race between the service and the reception. We went to the barn to have pictures taken with my horse. Doug gave me show horse for a wedding present and he had never been near a horse till he met me. Now that's love. The poor thing didn't know what he was getting into. Thirty-five years later he has had chickens, pigs, puppies, sheep, kittens and various other critters share the house with him. He comes in the door and sees a kennel and just says What's in it this time? Somethings are just meant to be. We went to London, Paris and Amsterdam on our honeymoon. Our thirty-fifth anniversary is this year and he is taking me on a Panama Canal cruise. This one's a keeper.I hope you enjoyed reading our love story as much as I have loved living it. (and you wonder where Emily gets her ideas from hehehe)Nancy
